History

Gratiot Emergency Housing Corporation was created to help residents of Gratiot County, MI meet sudden and unexpected home-related expenses in a time of need when other sources of funding fall short.

GEHC offers a hand up, not a handout. Funding is limited so people receiving interest free assistance from GEHC will be asked to sign a repayment agreement {we recommend at least $10 monthly}; Repayment allows:

  • The person receiving help to be proactive in taking care of their emergency;
  • GEHC to grow the funds with which we help other Gratiot County families.

Future assistance, if needed, is based on compliance with repayment.

A Little Bit About Us…….

  • GEHC was founded in 1969 to assist several families displaced by a fire.  We have been actively involved in assisting Gratiot County residents and families for 47 years continuously.  Our first project was to locate an “emergency home” for those temporarily homeless.
  • This effort to find lodging began our relationship with Salvation Army, community volunteers, funds from county agencies and community donations, time and materials donated by area businesses and some labor provided by volunteers an in cooperation with a county work program.
  • Early in those years our organization provided financial aide, advocacy, referral, counseling, and information….. much like today.
  • A majority of our work was done by phone, as it is today.
  • In 1982 we became a United Way Agency and our volunteer board provides all services as there is NO paid staff.
  • In looking back our organization has grown from serving 2 families in 1976 to serving 90 families in 1987…..to today in just the 7 months of 2016 we have contributed $15,469.49 to support our area families.
  • A special thanks to those early volunteers and Shirley and Verne Bechill, from Alma who were long standing board members who persisted in keeping GEHC an area organization reaching out to help Gratiot community members when there seemed to be no help available.
